The YRF-21 fife is capable of producing a rich tone which carries well. It is played transversely (sideways) and has the potential to act as a first step for aspiring young flute players.
Whilst not a true fife in the historic sense—fifes have six tone holes and are diatonic rather than chromatic—the YRF-21 is held in a similar way. Its fingering patterns and range are similar to a descant recorder.
