The 190 series of Bach Stradivarius trumpets was introduced in 2010 to revive a number of design features associated with the company’s finest vintage instruments. The range is characterised by a vintage-style two-piece valve casing design, in contrast to the one-piece casings used on standard Bach Stradivarius trumpets since the late 1970s.

Within the range, the 190M37X is distinguished by a number of further refinements. Its defining feature is a Medium Plus or M+ (0.456-in.) bore, positioned between Bach’s traditional medium and medium-large sizes. Working with the M+ bore is a lightweight specification comprising a Mt. Vernon-weight one-piece hand-hammered #37X yellow brass bell, narrow-wrap nickel Z braces, and a reverse Vindabona tuning slide.

The resulting instrument offers the immediacy and agility of a medium-bore trumpet with the tonal breadth, stability and projection of a larger bore, making the 190M37X an exceptionally versatile choice for the professional player.

† Bach bell models:
When Vincent Bach began manufacturing instruments in the early 1920s, his experiments resulted in over 70 different trumpet bell models, each numbered according to the ‘mandrel’ or mould it was shaped upon. By the early 1950s certain standard models had emerged, those we now know as #37, #43 and #72. The model #37 is regarded as the standard all-round bell, suitable for all styles; the #43 is broader, brighter and more open than the #37 (suitable for jazz lead); the #72 has a strong, powerful sound, darker than the #37 (but takes more effort to play than the #37 or #43).

A traditional bell-rim construction in which the outer edge of the bell is wrapped around a flattened, half-round wire rather than the more common cylindrical wire. The reduced mass at the rim allows the bell to vibrate differently, which many players associate with a quicker response and greater brilliance.

The bell seam is rotated ninety degrees so that it lies beneath one of the braces rather than along the bottom of the bell. Bach adopted this construction on selected models to minimise the seam’s influence on the unsupported portion of the bell, contributing a responsive feel and powerful projection.

The Vindabona tuning slide uses a unique bore profile that differs from a conventional Bach tuning slide. Its asymmetrical dimensions alter the instrument's resistance and response, producing a broader, more open playing feel that many players associate with Austrian rotary trumpets.

A two-piece valve casing combines a brass lower section with a nickel-silver upper section, known as the baluster. This construction was used on vintage Bach trumpets and has been reintroduced on the 190 series.

Named after Bach’s original Mt. Vernon factory in New York state, this bell uses a lighter material profile than the standard #37 bell. The reduced mass contributes to the instrument’s quick response while preserving the broad tonal character of classic Bach trumpets.
