Although a [name] contains relatively few moving parts, several components are subject to gradual wear through normal use. Periodically inspecting items such as water key corks, valve felts and valve springs allows worn or damaged parts to be replaced before they affect the instrument’s performance.
Many of the replacement parts on this page can be fitted by a competent owner using basic tools and a little care. If you are unsure whether a part is suitable for your instrument, or would prefer our workshop to carry out the work, we will be happy to advise.
There is no fixed replacement interval, as wear depends on how frequently the instrument is played and how well it is maintained. All of these components are inspected as part of our annual workshop service and replaced if they show signs of wear or damage. As a guide, check them whenever the valves are removed for cleaning, or if you notice changes in valve action, increased mechanical noise or a leaking water key.
If one component has reached the end of its service life, the remaining parts of the same type are often similarly worn. Replacing a complete set of valve felts or valve springs can help maintain consistent performance and avoid the need for repeated maintenance.

A leaking water key is usually caused by a worn, hardened or damaged cork that no longer seals against the water key seat. Replacing the cork is a straightforward job for most competent owners and is often enough to restore an airtight seal.
Excessive valve noise is often caused by worn valve felts or buffers, which cushion the movement of the piston. As these compress with use, mechanical noise may increase and valve alignment can be affected. Replacing valve felts is within the capability of most competent owners, and should help restore a quiet valve action.
Yes. If your valves feel sluggish despite being clean and properly lubricated, the valve springs may have weakened through normal use. Renewing tired springs can restore a quicker, more consistent valve action. Valve springs are simple to replace during routine inspection or servicing and require no specialist tools.
Valve guides prevent the valve pistons from rotating and keep air passages aligned. If a guide becomes worn or broken, the piston may rotate, causing impaired valve function and disruption to airflow through the instrument. Although a valve guide can often be replaced without specialist tools, some replacement guides require careful fitting or adjustment. For this reason, we recommend that owners who are unfamiliar with valve maintenance seek advice before attempting the repair.
Some instruments also use bottom valve felts or synthetic buffers to cushion the piston at the end of its downward travel. If these have become worn or compressed, noise may continue even after the top felts have been replaced. Bottom valve felts or buffers can normally be replaced by a competent owner when maintaining the valves.
If the cork is in good condition but the water key still leaks, the spring may have weakened or be damaged. Replacing it can help the water key to seal reliably. Although this requires no specialist tools, fitting a water key spring can be surprisingly fiddly and may require patience to complete successfully.
