This item is offered at a lower than normal price after failing the manufacturer's stringent quality inspection, usually as a result of a minor cosmetic fault that does not affect its function. Items sold as 'seconds' will be inspected before dispatch to ensure they remain fully fit for their intended purpose.
Manufacturer’s description:
‘Denis Wick originally designed this mute for the best-selling Besson euphonium. It has been a favourite with euphonium players ever since. Played strongly, it is capable of telling projection, with an even sound through the range including the very highest notes. There is no other euphonium mute with its unique tone colour and minimal resistance.
‘Made from high purity spun aluminum, these handmade mutes blend perfectly, provide unmatched brilliance and projection, and have excellent intonation. Denis Wick offers the most comprehensive line of straight mutes available.’

Straight mutes are by far the most widely used mutes for brass. They are cone-shaped with narrow corks to hold them in the bell. Sound emerges from the gaps between the corks. Straight mutes generally reduce low frequencies and accentuate high, giving a more nasal, reedy sound. Aluminium straight mutes have a brighter sound than those made of softer materials like plastic, fibre or wood.
