First marketed as ‘an entirely new concept in French horn mutes’, the Omni-Mute is a tuneable, adjustable plastic straight mute which claims to be ‘the only French horn mute you will ever need’.
A non-transposing mute, it has a screw mechanism operated by a rotating adjustment ring to vary tone colour, and a tuning mechanism for personal pitch regulation controlled by a small knob on the bottom of the mute.
The Holton-Farkas product line was a joint venture between instrument manufacturer Frank Holton & Co. and horn virtuoso Philip Farkas (1914–92), long-time principal horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It resulted in eighteen different models of French horn, some of which remain in production, and a range of French horn mouthpieces.
