†Most modern full-double French horns follow one of two layouts, distinguished by the position of the thumb-operated fourth valve relative to the three standard valves. In the Krüspe layout, the fourth valve sits near the thumb lever and first valve; in the Geyer layout, it follows the third valve. Geyer horns have a more open wrap with fewer tubing bends and typically a smaller bell, producing a brighter tone. To temper this brightness, many Geyer models use yellow or red brass. The Krüspe layout’s tighter, closed wrap and larger bell create a darker sound, so some instruments are built from nickel-silver to add brilliance.
