The Amati ABN32 short reach bassoon has the sound and feel of a standard bassoon but has been modified to allow children as young as eight to handle it comfortably.

Its weight has been decreased by shortening the bore (reducing the range to low C) and simplifying the keywork, the latter repositioned to accommodate smaller hands.
