Though used for performances of Baroque music, solo and orchestral players are recognising the usefulness of high-pitched trumpets in the wider repertoire for security in high passages, as well as for their clarity and lyricism.
The Yamaha YTR-9635 E/E-flat model features a heavyweight bell to maintain the rich full sound of a big trumpet alongside the greater control it allows in the higher registers.
It is supplied with two detachable bells and two sets of slides to allow the instrument to be set up in either E-flat or E. This makes it especially useful for the Haydn (E-flat) and Hummel (E) concertos, both written for the Viennese trumpet virtuoso Anton Weidinger, who performed them on a keyed instrument before the introduction of piston valves.
